"Only God can move this World Cup."
So said World Cup Local Organizing Committee (LOC) chief Danny Jordaan to a session of the South African Parliament's sports and recreation yesterday.
Brash words but I suppose confidence is what is needed now from South Africa and their organizing chief.
Addressing the committee on the country's readiness to host the world's biggest event, Jordaan said Plan B was "long dead" and that there was no other country in the world ready to host a World Cup in less than 18 months.
He said the world was "focused" on South Africa and that hospitality packages worth millions of rands had already been sold for the tournament.
"We are going to deliver this event, there is no doubt about that," said Jordaan. "We have some of the best stadiums in the world and have a track record of hosting world-class events. We have the experience. We hosted rugby and cricket World Cups, the All Africa Games, the Athletics World Cup and a number of other events - only God can move this World Cup. Only a natural disaster could lead to it being moved elsewhere."
